### Summary of shale gas evaluation applying geophysical logging

Abstract: In gas shale, the gas is generated in place; the shale acts as the source rock, the reservoir and the capping formation. Part of the gas is stored in matrix porosity and fracture as free gas, the other part is adsorbed in the surface of organic and clay as adsorbed gas, another part is dissolved in bitumen and water as dissolved gas. Shale gas systems are of two distinct types: biogenic and/or thermogenic. The gas accumulated under some geologic condition as a commercial unconventional reservoir. In the exploration and exploitation of shale gas, geophysical logging is an important means for its identification, evaluation and provides some effective parameters to direct the well completion. Gas shale is characterized by its extremely low porosity, extremely low permeability, strong heterogeneity and anisotropy, thus it is unsuitable for well logging interpretation of shale gas applying interpretation means of conventional reservoir, and it is necessary to reconstruct a new system for well logging interpretation of shale gas. Evaluating the reservoir potential of a gas shale involves weighing positive or negative contributions from a variety of factors, including shale mineralogy and texture, the content and types of clay, kerogen type and maturity, fluid saturation, adsorbed and free gas storage mechanisms, burial depth, temperature and pore pressure, etc. In particular, porosity, organic content and gas content are important for determining whether a shale shows potential for further development. Based on the comprehensive research of exploration and exploitation of shale gas abroad recently, especially America, this paper summarizes the present situation of shale gas exploration and exploitation applying geophysical logging and made an analysis of data acquisition series of well logging in the view of different stage of exploration. As to well logging identification of shale gas, this paper summarizes the logging response of gas shale. Then the paper discussed some important parameters and its evaluation methods of shale gas using geophysical logging in detail, including total organic carbon, mineral types and content of formation, porosity, gas content (free gas and adsorbed gas) and some rock mechanical parameters. In the last, this paper puts forward several questions about the research of geophysical logging for shale gas in China, then discusses the development trend of geophysical logging.
